Plans For St Pete Sculpture Museum On Central Avenue Take Shape
It is safe to say, St. Petersburg is a museum magnet. The MFA on Beach Drive, the Florida Holocaust Museum, The Chihuly Collection and the Dali all help position the Sunshine City on the map as a premier arts destination. Not to mention the remarkable collections the likes of Florida CraftArt, Studio@620, Soft Water Studios, Duncan McClellan and various others throughout the community that continue to deliver to area's local residents as well as visitors.
The James Museum and The Museum of the American Arts and Crafts Movement are currently being built with anticipated openings within the next few years. And yet another arts bastion seeks to mark their mark in sunny St. Pete; the St. Pete Sculpture Museum will be joining the Chihuly Collection on the 700 Block of Central Avenue. The move in is slated to begin in early October.
Art enthusiasts can currently marvel the museum's collection of larger than life creations at its 290 MLK Jr. St. North studio. Relocating to the Central Avenue space will allow the Sculpture Museum to feature a wide variety of works, host larger events and garner MUCH MORE visibility. In addition to increased exhibition space, the new location boasts a three level parking garage above, making it far more accessible.
On hand for your viewing pleasure, a 27-foot lion, an 8-foot Neil Armstrong and dozens of sculptures from life-size to giant-size to how-the-heck-did-he-do-that size all courtesy of renowned sculptor Jon Hair. If all goes according to plan, the museum could be open in its new space sometime in late December or early January.
